Instead of replacing, consider repairing. The Right-to-Repair movement is growing, so research repair shops or repair service people in your area. Better yet, improve your own skills by seeking out Fixit programs and classes at your local Maker Space.
California Right to Repair:
Electronics and Appliances (SB 244)
Effective since July 1, 2024, this act requires manufacturers of consumer electronics and appliances ($50+ wholesale) to make diagnostic documentation, repair manuals, parts, and tools available to consumers and third-party repair shops on fair and reasonable terms. Parts must be provided for 3 years (for items under $100) to 7 years (for items $100+). For more details, review the California Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair SB 244 Advisory. [1, 2, 3]
Residential Construction (SB 800)
Enacted in 2002, this act establishes builder performance standards and a mandatory pre-litigation process. Homeowners must provide builders with written notice and an opportunity to inspect and repair structural or construction defects before filing a lawsuit. To understand the specific timelines and procedures, read the Bay Legal SB 800 Homeowner Guide. [1, 2, 3]
