Rethink Sustainability

We live in this beautiful mountain wilderness because we love nature, but are we living sustainably? A sustainable lifestyle sounds as restrictive and rigid as the Blood Type Diet. Do we have to live in Solar-powered Tiny Houses or Geodesic Domes with an aquaponic garden? Well no but, we try to live sustainably. We drink Tahoe Tap in reusable water bottles, recycle and donate stuff. What else can we do?

Let’s identify the problem. In the 1800s, Consumption (TB) killed one in seven of people. In 2023, the disease is Overconsumption and it’s killing our environment. We are consumers. We work hard so we deserve new things, right? With mail order and free returns, we can order anything without risk. Just remember, that return-shipping increases the carbon footprint of that item.

We like stuff. George Carlin said it so well, “That’s all your house is: a place to keep your stuff. If you didn’t have so much stuff, you wouldn’t need a house. A house is just a pile of stuff with a cover on it.”

How do we responsibly get rid of extra stuff? We don’t want to send things to the landfill, but it happens. Solid Waste Pollution is threatening our environment, where we live. Perhaps Nostradamus secretly penned the screenplay for WALL-E, because our consumption and waste habits are destroying Earth’s ecosystems, causing mass extinctions of plants and animals, like in the movie.

When you see MOOP (Matter out of place, a.k.a. trash), pick it up even if it’s not yours. That comes with good karma.
